Since the early 20th century,<!--more--> Earth&#8217;s mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8\u00a0\u00b0C (1.4\u00a0\u00b0F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.<span style=\"font-size: 12px\">\u00a0<\/span>Warming of the\u00a0climate system\u00a0is unequivocal, and scientists are 95-100% certain that it is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of\u00a0greenhouse gases\u00a0produced by human activities such as the burning of\u00a0fossil fuels\u00a0and\u00a0deforestation.\u00a0These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Earth&#8217;s average surface temperature\u00a0rose by\u00a00.74\u00b10.18\u00a0\u00b0C\u00a0over the period 1906\u20132005. The rate of warming over the last half of that period was almost double that for the period as a whole (0.13\u00b10.03\u00a0\u00b0C\u00a0per decade, versus\u00a00.07\u00b10.02\u00a0\u00b0C\u00a0per decade). The\u00a0urban heat island\u00a0effect is very small, estimated to account for less than\u00a00.002\u00a0\u00b0C\u00a0of warming per decade since 1900.\u00a0Temperatures in the lower\u00a0troposphere\u00a0have increased between 0.13 and\u00a00.22\u00a0\u00b0C\u00a0(0.22 and\u00a00.4\u00a0\u00b0F) per decade since 1979, according to\u00a0satellite temperature measurements.\u00a0Climate proxies\u00a0show the temperature to have been relatively stable over the\u00a0one or two thousand years\u00a0before 1850, with regionally varying fluctuations such as the\u00a0Medieval Warm Period\u00a0and the\u00a0Little Ice Age.<sup id=\"cite_ref-29\"><br \/>\n<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The warming that is evident in the instrumental temperature record is consistent with a wide range of observations, as documented by many independent scientific groups.\u00a0Examples include\u00a0sea level rise\u00a0(water\u00a0expands\u00a0as it warms),\u00a0widespread melting of\u00a0snow\u00a0and ice,\u00a0increased\u00a0heat content of the oceans,\u00a0increased\u00a0humidity,\u00a0and the earlier\u00a0timing\u00a0of\u00a0spring\u00a0events,\u00a0e.g., the\u00a0flowering\u00a0of\u00a0plants.\u00a0The\u00a0probability\u00a0that these changes could have occurred by chance is virtually zero.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global warming\u00a0is the rise in the average temperature of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation.
